Mainz Carnival kicks off with 'Helau'

Mainz, Germany – 11.11.2023

The 2023 Mainz Carnival season officially began on November 11th at 11:11 am with the traditional cry of "Helau!"

Thousands of revelers gathered in the city center to witness the raising of the Narrenfahne (jester's flag) and the start of the "fünften Jahreszeit" (fifth season).

The Mainz Carnival is one of the largest and most famous in Germany, attracting over half a million visitors each year.

The festivities will continue until March 1st, with a variety of events and parades taking place throughout the city.

One of the highlights of the Mainz Carnival is the Rosenmontagszug (Rose Monday Parade), which takes place on the Monday before Ash Wednesday.

The parade features over 100 floats and thousands of participants, and is one of the largest and most colorful parades in Europe.
