Vendée, a Region in Western France
The Vendée is a department in the Pays de la Loire region in western France. It is named after the Vendée river, which flows through the department.
The Vendée has a long and rich history, dating back to the Roman era. It was part of the Duchy of Aquitaine in the Middle Ages, and later became part of the Kingdom of France.
The Vendée War and the Vendée Globe
The Vendée is perhaps best known for the Vendée War, a counter-revolutionary uprising that took place during the French Revolution. The war was fought between the Republican government and the Catholic and royalist forces of the Vendée.
The Vendée War was a brutal and bloody conflict, and resulted in the deaths of thousands of people. It ended with the defeat of the royalists, and the establishment of the French Republic.
In 1989, the Vendée Globe was established as a solo, non-stop, round-the-world yacht race. The race is held every four years, and starts and finishes in the Vendée.
The Vendée Globe is one of the most challenging and dangerous yacht races in the world. The course is over 24,000 miles long, and the sailors must contend with treacherous seas and winds.
