Schalke breathes a sigh of relief: Karaman and Sylla strike against tame Jahn
Schalke secures a 2-0 victory over Jahn Regensburg
FC Schalke 04 celebrated their first home win of the season in front of 52,213 spectators in the Veltins-Arena on Friday evening. Goals from Kenan Karaman (43rd minute) and Ajdin Hrustic (73rd minute) sealed the 2-0 win against SSV Jahn Regensburg.
"We have to keep working, but it was a step forward," said relieved Schalke coach Thomas Reis, whose team had lost their last two league games.
Schalke takes the initiative, but initially lacks accuracy
Schalke started brightly and forced Jahn goalkeeper Dejan Stojanovic into action as early as the fifth minute. Rodrigo Zalazar's free-kick from the right was well-saved by the keeper.
The hosts controlled the game, but struggled to create clear-cut chances. Only Karaman (15th minute) and Danny Latza (35th minute) managed to threaten the Regensburg goal.
Karaman breaks the deadlock before the break
Just before the break, Schalke finally broke the deadlock. Karaman converted a low cross from Simon Terodde from close range to put the hosts 1-0 up.
After the break, Jahn came out stronger and had a good chance to equalize through Sarpreet Singh after a mistake by Schalke keeper Alexander Schwolow (47th minute).
Hrustic ends the game with ice-cold finish
The visitors continued to push, but Schalke defended passionately and struck in the 73rd minute. Substitute Hrustic finished off a lightning-fast counter-attack initiated by Karaman and assisted by Terodde with an ice-cold finish, sealing the 2-0 victory.
Schalke moves up to 12th place in the 2. Bundesliga with 16 points from 13 games, while Jahn remains in 16th place with 11 points.
