Rotation an unnecessary risk Rodgers doesn’t need to take
Rodgers should be the Packers’ starter for as long as he wants the job
It doesn't take Sherlock Holmes to figure out there's an uncommonly large gap between Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love on the Green Bay Packers’ depth chart.
Rodgers is a future Hall of Famer, a four-time NFL MVP who has led the Packers to 13 consecutive winning seasons, nine NFC North titles, and one Super Bowl victory.
Love is a former first-round pick who has yet to start an NFL game.
So, it's understandable that Packers fans are clamoring for Love to get a chance to play. After all, he's the future of the franchise, right?
Not so fast.
Rodgers is still playing at a high level. He's coming off a season in which he led the NFL in touchdown passes (48) and passer rating (122.5).
There's no reason to believe that Rodgers can't continue to play at a high level for several more years.
There's no upside to benching Rodgers now
Benching Rodgers would send the wrong message to the team. It would tell the players that the Packers are giving up on the season.
It would also create a distraction. Rodgers is one of the most popular players in the NFL. His benching would be a major story, and it would dominate the headlines for weeks.
The Packers need to focus on winning games, not creating distractions.
Love will get his chance eventually
Love is a talented quarterback. There's no doubt about that.
But he's not ready to be a starting quarterback in the NFL. He needs more time to develop.
Love will get his chance to play eventually. But it's not time yet.
Conclusion
The Packers should stick with Rodgers as their starting quarterback for as long as he wants the job.
There's no reason to bench him now. He's still playing at a high level, he's the leader of the team, and he gives the Packers the best chance to win.
Love will get his chance eventually. But it's not time yet.
