Hamann Criticizes Mbappé: Not Putting in Enough Effort
Former Bayern star Dietmar Hamann has aimed criticism at Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappé, accusing the Frenchman of being "unmotivated" and not performing at the level expected of him.
Hamann's comments come as PSG prepare for their Champions League round of 16 second leg clash against Bayern Munich, with the German giants holding a 1-0 lead from the first leg in Paris. Mbappé, who has been struggling with a thigh injury, is a major doubt for the match and Hamann believes the 24-year-old's attitude has been a major factor in his recent poor form.
"He's not putting in the effort," Hamann said in an interview with Sky Germany. "He's not motivated and he's not performing at the level that we've come to expect from him. He's not doing the things that make him a special player. He's not running, he's not tracking back, and he's not creating chances for his teammates."
Hamann, who won the Champions League with Bayern in 2001, believes that Mbappé has been affected by the speculation surrounding his future. The French international is out of contract at PSG at the end of the season and has been linked with a move to Real Madrid.
"I think the whole Real Madrid thing has got to him," Hamann added. "He's got his head turned and he's not focused on playing for PSG. He's thinking about his next move and it's affecting his performances."
Mbappé has scored 25 goals in 26 games for PSG this season, but his performances have been inconsistent. He has been criticized for his lack of effort in recent weeks and has been booed by his own fans on several occasions.
"He needs to wake up and start performing," Hamann said. "He's a great player, but he's not showing it at the moment. He needs to get back to doing what he does best and that's scoring goals and creating chances for his teammates."
It remains to be seen whether Mbappé will be fit to face Bayern Munich on Tuesday night. If he does play, he will need to put in a much improved performance if PSG are to have any chance of overturning the deficit and reaching the quarter-finals.
