Disoriented Sailor Found After Five-Hour Search
Coast Guard, local authorities, and volunteers team up to locate missing boater
A disoriented sailor was found safe and sound after a five-hour search involving the Coast Guard, local authorities, and volunteers.
The sailor, identified as 62-year-old John Smith, was reported missing after he failed to return from a fishing trip on Saturday evening. His boat was found adrift near the shore, but Smith was nowhere to be seen.
The Coast Guard launched a search and rescue operation, and local authorities and volunteers also joined the effort. After five hours of searching, Smith was found clinging to a buoy about a mile from his boat.
Smith was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, but he is expected to make a full recovery. He told authorities that he had become disoriented after his boat's engine failed. He tried to row back to shore, but he got turned around and lost.
The Coast Guard praised the efforts of the local authorities and volunteers who helped in the search. "This was a great example of teamwork and cooperation," said Coast Guard Petty Officer Jessica Jones. "We are grateful to everyone who helped us find Mr. Smith."
Tips for staying safe while boating:
- Always file a float plan with someone on shore.
- Check the weather forecast before you go out.
- Wear a life jacket.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Carry a whistle or other signaling device.
If you ever find yourself lost or disoriented while boating, stay calm and try to attract attention by blowing a whistle or waving your arms. If possible, try to get back to your boat and call for help.
